Historique :	La scène se déroule durant la conquête de l'Algérie et figure le combat de Sidi Youssef en septembre 1843 ; le corps de l'armée poursuit les troupes d'Abd-el-Kader. Au cours du combat, Joseph Escoffier, trompette originaire de Besançon, donne son cheval à son capitaine dont le propre cheval vient d'être tué ; il sera fait prisonnier puis libéré et recevra la Légion d'Honneur la même année (fiche CAOA) ; Alexandre Balthazar (1811-1875), peintre de l'est de la France, réalise des peintures d'histoire présentées au salon entre 1833 et 1868. Il finit sa vie à Toul où il réalise des tableaux d'inspiration religieuse et restaure les peintures sur verre de la cathédrale.
