Historique :	L'hôpital Saint Louis fut fondé en 1667 et la chapelle édifiée en 1689-1690. En 1695, on y installa un tableau dû à Galloys, dont on ne connaît pas le sujet. En 1720, le retable du maître-autel du menuisier rochelais Pierre Lallemand fut orné d'un tableau figurant saint Louis lavant les pieds des pauvres. En 1726, la foudre détruisit le retable et brûla la partie inférieure de la toile. Les réparations furent effectuées pau après. L'église, ayant eu à souffrir de la Révolution, fut réaménagée au tout début du 19ème siècle. Un inventaire de 1804 décrit le maître-autel garni de quatre colonnes et du tableau représentant saint Louis. Après examen, la peinture ne serait pas une recomposition effectuée au 19ème siècle mais une réparation du milieu du 17ème siècle de la peinture.
